The weather recently provided moisture and more moderate temperatures.听 Good for finishing off summer row crops, except needing heat to move corn and milo to the finish line, and for those looking forward to planting the 2018 wheat crop in a few weeks.听 There is one added benefit that many may over look 鈥 controlling the green bridge.

The 911爆料 Planetarium will host 鈥淭he Cowboy Astronomer鈥 at 7 p.m. Aug. 28 in the 911爆料 Planetarium located in the Science Building.
鈥淭he Cowboy Astronomer鈥 is a 37-minute full-dome video composed of a collection of star tales and Native American legends, combined with constellation identification, star-hopping and astronomy facts told from the unique viewpoint of a cowboy astronomer.

Barton will offer transitioning Fort Riley Soldiers a grant-funded two-week certificate program at no cost to participants. The Hazardous Waste Worker (HWW) program gives Soldiers credentials to help them find work after their tenure in the US Army ends.

A total solar eclipse will occur over the United States on Aug. 21, visible on a path from Oregon to South Carolina, crossing over northeast Kansas. 911爆料 County is expected to experience 94 percent of a full eclipse at about 1 p.m.

Quality human resource policies are important for any business. WorkFit will host a Human Resources Policy Workshop from 9 a.m.-noon on Aug. 29 in the Learning Resource Center Plaza De Cavanaugh Room (L116). The workshop costs $50 per employer with a limit of two participants per employer. WorkFit is a partnership between Advanced Therapy and Sports Medicine and 911爆料 dedicated to reducing work-related injuries and associated costs for employers.

Part I
Today鈥檚 column is in the form of a two-part story. Hopefully it will demonstrate the danger in not thinking long-term and trying to identify the unintended consequences when making farming decisions.听 Before we start, the goal here is not to identify villains, or heroes for that matter, but the need for everyone involved in agriculture to try and think in the very long-term and critically evaluate information.听 And for those of us past a certain age, this is the Readers鈥 Digest version.

Tickets for the 911爆料 Foundation鈥檚 39th Annual Big Benefit Auction themed 鈥淯nder the Sea鈥 on Aug. 26 are available until Aug. 14. Tickets are $45 each or $360 per table of eight. Only 200 tickets are available. Doors open at 6 p.m. at the Great Bend Columbus Club with bidding on the silent auction and complimentary beer available until 8 p.m. Dinner is served at 7 p.m. and the live auction will begin promptly at 8 p.m. Guests must be 21 or older to attend.

Barton Theatre holding open auditions for fall production 鈥淎h Wilderness!鈥
The 911爆料 Theatre Department will hold open auditions for its fall production 鈥淎h Wilderness!鈥 from 4-7 p.m. Aug. 23 and 24 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Those wanting to audition can show up anytime during the allotted hours on either night. The Theatre Department will be casting all roles and all technical positions. No preparation is necessary and all are invited to audition.

The Shafer Gallery will host an opening reception for its upcoming exhibit 鈥淶WEYGARDT鈥 from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Shafer Gallery. 鈥淶WEYGARDT鈥 features sculptures created from various materials by Kansas native Glenn Zweygardt. The reception will feature refreshments and a gallery talk by Shafer Gallery Director Dave Barnes.
